General on implementation of teaching
The Department has four professors and ten other positions with teaching duties. In addition to regular teaching staff there are some 45 project researchers (graduate students, post-docs and senior researchers). The teaching given by the Department is realized by co-operation of this whole body of experts: all academic staff members take part in teaching. This arrangement makes it possible to assign teaching duties based on the expertise of each teacher. All teachers are offered pedagogical training targeted for teaching biochemistry.
Teaching languages are Finnish and English - partly because not all teachers speak Finnish and also because a biochemist needs good skills in English. About one half of biochemistry studies consist of laboratory work.

The Bologna process or the harmonization of university degrees in EU began in the Autumn 2005. At our Department the courses underwent major rearrangements and development in this context. The linkage of theory and practice was further strengthened. Most courses are now based on continuous assessment where the final exam is not the only basis for grading. Different teaching and learning methods are varied on the courses, like for example problem based learning, debate, learning diary and use of bioinformatics.
